Education Paradigms

Thank you to Adesola for sharing the TED Talk by Ken Robinson on “Changing Education Paradigms”. I found this video absolutely fascinating then ordered some books by Ken Robinson to further extend my knowledge. See the link below for the video.

One of the most interesting points that is initially made is the “economic discussion”. How the drive of education is first and foremost from the needs of economic growth. He then goes on to explore our cultural identify. Whilst researching as part of the BAPP, I have realised that culture is evolutionary in nature, it is relative, diverse and fluid. Culture is expressed within drama and role-play exercises, it is at the very heart of who we are as artists.

Robinson also explores academic and non-academic ability and divergent thinking, which is the ability to see lots of different ways, laterally, with multiple answers not one. Within the arts, you have a fusion of economic and intellectual. Literary and artistic. The arts are the victims of this mentality, if we address the idea of aesthetic experience, which your senses are operating at the peak, and you are resonating with what you are experiencing. Something that I wish to do as a reflective practitioner.

Creativity

Creativity the process of having original ideas that have value. It is difficult to measure and we all have a capacity for creativity, which deteriorates the more institutionalised we get.

In his book "The Arts in Schools" he says that “The development of creativity needs a sound base in knowledge and skill but also teaching methods which are flexible and open-ended so that it can emerge and flourish.”

This applies to all subjects not just "the arts". That is one of the reasons why it is so difficult to measure, as creativity comes in so many different forms.

All in all, a fascinating insight to the paradigms of current educational practice. What are your thoughts?
