British Values in Drama Tuition
Exploring ethics in my practice over the last week or so I have thought about culture and specifically my British cultural heritage. This got me thinking about what our education is aiming to impart upon young people in the 21st Century which lead me on to British Values. There are 5 key British Values which are the following:
- democracy
- the rule of law
- individual liberty
- mutual respect
- tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and for those without faith
What does this mean in my practice? Well, British Values is an integral part of Drama tuition; through role-play and improvisation exercises pupils are able to acknowledge the importance of cultural tolerance and working together in a society both within the school and externally. Drama fundamentally promotes self-esteem and confidence building, provided that a safe and supporting learning environment is present; as well as a growing self-awareness of ability and knowledge. Respect is encouraged at all levels of drama tuition from Pre-prep age through to the senior years as working as an ensemble is vital for successes learning.
Part of the curriculum I have developed/ My practice focuses on theatre in different parts of the world as well as in England. Deeper understanding for these traditions and practices promotes tolerance and understanding of this and a positive influence on our pupil’s development.
