What is my Professional Practice?

What is my Professional Practice? 


This is something I have been mulling over this weekend and ironically I felt this was quite a hard question to answer.

So what is my Professional Practice? Well in short, I am a Drama Teacher at my theatre school and at a Prep School in Winchester. I am also a LAMDA Tutor. I teach children drama skills and prepare pupils for LAMDA Examinations.

So why is this question so difficult for me to answer? Is it because so much is expected of us now? Has it been too long since I have questioned my practice? I need to stop, think and reflect upon my recent developments and understand what my new role in my new job really is. 


Generalising here, I believe that the role of a teacher is constantly progressing. We are now classroom behaviourists, number crunchers, parental liaisons, pupil analysts, differential learning specialist, democratic speakers, the list appears endless. 

But aside from the obvious, I have listed what I do and what aspire to achieve:
  • Be a positive role model for all pupils (This is something I feel very strongly about - please see my other blog on "The Importance of a Good Role Model" https://www.fireflytheatreschool.co.uk/blog )
  • Support individual creativity in a safe learning environment
  • Inspire, challenge and engage
  • Promote independence
  • Promote a sense of ensemble
  • Adhere to safeguarding policies and procedures, codes of conduct, behavioural policies, health and safety guidelines and risk assessments
  • Expand upon theatrical knowledge 
  • Help children build upon theatrical skill (vocal, physical, emotional, stage craft, historical contact and history)
What have a missed? Which of these cross over to your profession? I would be grateful to hear your comments.

Making Links

Ten years ago, in a movement class at the Drama Centre London we were exploring circles, specifically circles of movement. What circles can we create with our bodies? With parts of our bodies, our minds and so forth. The signification came when we realised that life, plays, characters, history, thoughts, are their own circles. Everything in connected and interconnect, they overlap and create wonderful patters that contribute to the creativity and validity of our own circle of life. Circles are constant, donate a sense of movement and express that our life is a constant state of fluidity; as is our thinking. Wednesday's Skype call (which included students from all modules) was a reminder to me that I must keep remembering to link back what I am doing throughout module 3. Inspiration Station

Module 3 is nearly over. The artefact, feedback and professional inquiry have been submitted. I am now turning my attention towards my presentation.  Dr Adesola Akinleye has asked us to blog about what has been inspiring us over the festive break.
